Sat 1 Oct – YAOUK PEAK – 14 km Medium (11)
Leader: Barrie R.  Mostly on fire trail, climbing through lovely tall forest, then snow gums, before the final, short,  summit push, off track over rocks and through low scrubby stuff. Lovely views.   A great walk but a long drive.  Total climb: 950 m. Cars: 170 km ($20).  Map: Yaouk.   Meet at K at 8.00 am.***

Sun 2 Oct – HUME AND HOVELL TRACK ALONG MICALONG CREEK - 12 km Easy (7)
Leader: Jillian B.  From near the picnic grounds just off the Brindabella Road we follow the Hume and Hovell Track downstream to Micalong Creek.  En route we admire wildflowers, cascades and waterfalls and are accompanied by many kinds of birds.  We have lunch at the lovely Micalong Creek Campsite.   Climb: 300 m.  Cars: 120 km ($14).  Maps: Bobbys Plains, Couragago.

Sat 8 Oct – MT PAINTER – ARBORETUM AND AFTERNOON TEA – 11 km Easy (7)
Leader: Diana K. Starting in Mackellar Crescent, Cook we walk to the top of Mt Painter and then down to the Aranda Frost Hollow. From there we walk through the Cork Plantation to the Arboretum where we have lunch at the Himalayan Cedar Forest picnic area. Return to Cook for afternoon tea. All on track. Total climb: 250 m. Sun 9 Oct – LOWDEN TOWER AND TRIG – 12 km Medium (8)
Leader:  David W.  From Queanbeyan we drive to the Tallaganda State Forest via Hoskinstown and Rossi leaving the cars near the junction of Lowden Road and Coxes Creek Road. We walk along the Lowden Trig Fire Trail, climbing up to where the Bald Hill Fire Trail joins on the left and then down to the valley before climbing again towards Lowden Trig. Most of this walk is on fire trails and foot tracks, through attractive forest; however the last short section of the walk from the tower to the trig is off track.  Total climb: 300 m. Cars: 100 km ($12). Map: Bendoura. Meet at Q.

Sat 15 Oct – ORRORAL HILL – 10 km Medium (11)
Leader: Prue D. From the Orroral Tracking Station car park, climb on the Granite Tops Walking Track up to the lunar laser ranging station. Turn to south-west and climb off track to the top of Orroral Hill. This is a demanding climb with some steep sections, thick scrub and rock scrambling, but good views at the top. Wear long pants or gaiters and bring gloves. Return the same way. Total climb: 700 m. Cars: 100 km ($12). Map: Rendezvous Creek. Meet at K.

Sat 15–Sun 23 Oct – WEDDIN MOUNTAINS AND NANGAR NATIONAL PARKS – Easy/Medium
Leader: Mike S.  It’s wildflower time out west and Weddin Mountains National Park, in particular, is renowned for them, so it’s time for a car camp.  Nine days of car-camping and day walking in these two central NSW national parks out near Forbes (3 full days in each NP plus 3 days for travelling to, from & between).  Participants may come for either or both national parks.  Leader may also go to Goobang National Park following this activity and you are welcome to join him.  For day to day details of activities or to express interest contact the leader, preferably by email.  Numbers limited.  This is a joint NPA/BBC activity.

Sun 16 Oct – GIBRALTAR ROCKS FROM THE VISITORS CENTRE – 13 km Easy (7)
Leader: Diana K. Starting at the Tidbinbilla Visitors Centre, we walk on track in the bush to Dalsetta for morning tea. From there we walk uphill to Gibraltar Rocks via the Mt Eliza Saddle. Enjoy the views while eating lunch on the Rocks. Return via the same route. All on track. Total climb: 350m. Cars: 60 km ($7). No park entry fee. Map: Tidbinbilla. Meet at K.

Sat 22 Oct – STONE WALLS AND ENVIRONS – 9 km Easy (7)
Leader:  Peter D.  We start at Glendale Crossing and follow the first creek line straight up hill (300 m climb over 2.5 km) to the stone walls; this is the longest climb of the day.  After morning tea here, we’ll move on to the saddle to enjoy the views and then east to the rocky outcrops for more views.   We’ll then head north to the national park boundary and back south-east to intercept the disused road.  Lunch will be somewhere along here, depending on progress.  We next follow the road to the Brandy Flat Fire Trail and back to the cars. Climb: 450 m. Cars: 80 km ($10). Map: Michelago. Meet at K at 8.30 am.***

Sun 23 Oct – WALKS LEADER/NAVIGATION COURSE
Leader: Bob C. Comprises a one-day introductory course, in a bushland setting, on daylight terrestrial navigation training (mapcraft, compass, GPS etc) and the role and responsibilities of a walks leader.  Bring pencil and paper, a Silva-type compass, a copy of the Tuggeranong 1:25,000 LPI NSW (Land and Property Information NSW) Second Edition (New Series) map.  Please contact Bob by Sun 2 Oct to book a place on the course.  Why become a walks leader? You get to choose where and when to have morning tea and lunch. Cars: 10 km ($1). Meet at K.

Sun 23 Oct – CAMELS HUMP AND PIERCES HILL - 17 km Medium (11) 
Leader: Terrylea R.  We will drive out to Mountain Creek car park (Tidbimbilla Nature Reserve) then walk along the fire trail ascending Camels Hump for magnificent views and then descending north-east down a short footpad to pick up the fire trail again continuing onto Pierces Hill (spot height 1363).  Return is all along the same fire trails.  A longish walk with some steepish sections and a rock scramble at the top of Camels Hump, but magnificent views as our reward.  Climb: 500 m.  Cars: 70 km ($8, plus Tidbinbilla entrance fee, if needed).  Map: Tidbinbilla.  Meet at K at 8.00 am.***

Sat 29 Oct – WILD CATTLE CREEK – 14 km Medium (8)
Leader: Lyn W. This is a pleasant walk, mainly off track, through varied forest in Tallaganda National Park. Starting near Wild Cattle Flat Road, we follow Wild Cattle Creek and then loop back along Ballinafad Creek to return to our starting point. Total climb: 250 m. Cars: 120 km ($14). Map: Tinderry.  Meet at Q. 

Sun 30 Oct – GILBERTS GAP, NEAR NERRIGA – 12 km Medium (9)
Leader: Peter W. We'll start the walk from the Nerriga entrance to Morton National Park, following the track to the Endrick River crossing, then the Red Grounds Track for another 1.5 km before heading north off track to Gilberts Gap. From the gap, we climb the cliff line onto the unnamed outcrop to the west for lunch and a view. Bring crocs for the river crossing. Total climb: 250 m. Cars: 250 km ($30). Maps: Endrick, Nerriga. Meet at Q at 8.30 am.***

Sat 5 Nov – MONGA NATIONAL PARK (joint BBC/NPA) – 8 km Medium (11)  
Leader:  Barrie R.  A walk along two tributaries of Sugarloaf Creek in beautiful rain forest.  We descend steeply from Misty Mountain Fire Trail, walk up one tributary, then climb steeply over a ridge to the next tributary and follow it down to Sugarloaf Creek, from where we climb back up to Misty Mountain Fire Trail.  The walk is all off track.   You may get wet feet.   There will be some scrub.  Suggest gaiters and gloves.  I expect that at times, in the face of ‘blow downs’, we may have to detour through the forest.  Total climb: 650 m.  Cars: about 250 km ($30).   Map:  Monga. Meet at S at 8.00 am.***

Sun 6 Nov – YANKEE HAT ROCK ART AND THREE HUTS – 13 km Easy (7)
Leader: Bob C. This is a circular walk from the Yankee Hat walking track car park. We shall visit the rock art, Frank and Jacks hut (for lunch), Hospital Creek hut and Foresters Hut. Most of the walk is on track, with the off track parts through fairly open bush and not difficult under foot.

Sat 12 Nov – OLD SOUTH CANBERRA – MORNING WALK – 9 km Easy (5)
Leader: Lyn W. Stay cool with a leisurely walk in the environs of Parliament House and through the shady streets of Yarralumla, Deakin and Forrest. After the walk, enjoy an optional byo picnic lunch in the Parliamentary Rose Garden. Map: Canberra suburbs.  Meet under trees towards eastern end of Queen Victoria Terrace (near tennis courts) at 9 am.***

Sat 12 – Sun 13 Nov – MINI PACK WALK (in a location to be decided closer to this date) – Easy
Leader: Jillian B.  The aim of this pack walk is for participants to spend a night in the bush away from the lights and noise of the city.  We will start the walk late Saturday morning and walk out late Sunday morning.  Please contact Jillian no later than 5 Nov if you are interested.

Sat 12 Nov – PROGRESSIVE DINNER – GARRAN TO MAWSON TO GARRAN – 13 km Easy (6)
Leader: Sue W.  Entrée in Garran, then walk via Red Hill and under Hindmarsh Drive to O'Malley.  Finishing at Mawson for main course.  Dessert either in Mawson or back at Garran. Return back directly to Garran.  BYO.  Please bring a torch and warm clothes as it can get cold by the end of the night.  The night usually finishes around 10.30 pm.  Phone Sue by 3 Nov to arrange a contribution and to get the addresses for the walk.  Meet at Garran at 4.00 pm.

Sun 13 Nov – GININI FALLS – Joint walk with CBC/NPA – 14 km Hard (12)
Leader: David D.  Starting at Mt Franklin car park we go down a scrubby spur towards Stockyard Creek.  Then it's along the scrubby Ginini Creek to the base of the falls.  Return via same route.  Climb: 550 m. Cars: 140 km ($17).  Map: Corin Dam.

Mon 14 Nov-Wed 7 Dec – WALKING IN TASMANIA – Easy and Medium 
Leader: John C. The trip covers 23 nights in Tasmania with 4 nights in Cradle Mountain, 5 nights each in the Tasman Peninsula and New Norfolk, 4 nights at Bruny Island and 5 nights at Deloraine. It will be possible to have 2 walks of different grades on most days. Accommodation can be in cabins or camping and we are staying in caravan parks. It is possible for members of the group to do a part of the trip if they do not have the time for the whole trip. Some of the group will be flying to Tasmania and others will be travelling by the car ferry. Please contact me as soon as you can, preferably using my new email address.

Sat 19 Nov – MT STROMLO AND BROWN HILL – Medium 12 km (9)
Leader: Peter W. We start walking at the high point on Uriarra Road at 825919, and walk along the northern and western margins of the Stromlo Reserve to Mt Brown. We then climb Mt Stromlo, return to the tall pines, and walk back to the cars contouring around the west side of Mt Stromlo. Walking is mainly on old or existing fire trails (some rough ground), with some nice rural views. Total climb: about 300 m. Cars: 14 km ($2). Meet at W at 8.00 am.***

Sun 20 Nov – THREE HUTS IN THE GUDGENBY VALLEY – 12 km Easy (7)
Leader: Leigh H.  We leave cars at the Yankee Hat car park and explore three huts in the Old Bobyan Road area. We first visit a 1966 Forestry Hut before continuing on to Frank and Jacks Hut and Hospital Creek Hut.  We also explore the Gudgenby Bush Regeneration Trail.  This is a shortish walk mostly on fire trail with 280 m altitude gain. Cars: 104 km ($12). Map: Yaouk. Meet at K.

Sat 26 Nov – SQUARE ROCK FROM SMOKERS GAP – 9 km Easy (6)
Leader: Ken H.  An easy walk on track to Square Rock via the Orroral Valley lookout. Good views from both the lookout and Square Rock. Lunch at Square Rock. The climb is a gradual 270 m. Cars: 70 km ($8). Map: Corin Dam. Meet at K.

Sun 27 Nov – NAMADGI VISITOR CENTRE - BUSHFOLD FLATS CIRCUIT – 17 km Medium (10)
Leader: Leigh H.  From Namadgi Visitor Centre we take the track up Mt Tennent until it reaches the Mt Tennent Fire Trail.  We head south towards Apollo Road before turning north at the turnoff to Bushfolds Flat. We visit Read’s Hut from where we continue north, rejoining the Australian Alps Walking Track which we follow to return to the cars. All on track including some steep downhill sections of slippery fire trail. Total ascent of about 700 m. Cars: 40 km ($5). Map: Williamsdale. Meet at K.

Fri 2–Mon 5 Dec – ETTREMA PACK WALK (joint NPA/BBC)
Leader:  Barrie R.  A relaxed Ettrema trip.  All off track.   We walk in on day one to a beautiful camp site where we stay for 3 nights; on days 2 and 3 we explore up and downstream (possibly some compulsory swims or wades), and walk out on day 4.  Time to relax, photograph, read, swim, paint, etc.  The walk to the camp site is about 4 km, downhill.  The walk out involves a climb of about 300 m.  Gaiters and gloves for the walk in/out, Volleys a good idea for days 2 and 3, and in case of compulsory swims; waterproof liner bags for day packs are essential.  Cars: 330 km ($130 per car incl. the driver). We will need Forester type vehicles or above.  Deadline for bookings is 25 Nov.

Sat 3 Dec – PUNCH BOWL CREEK FALLS AND WHITE HORSE ROCKS – 9 km Medium (9)
Leader:  Peter D.  We park alongside Corin Dam Road, 1 km before the Square Rock car park and follow a series of old fire trails east-north-east for 1500 m to Punch Bowl Creek and then down to the falls.  After morning tea here, we backtrack for about 500 m, before heading south uphill (250 m climb over 1600 m) through sometimes thick scrub to a large balancing rock and a great view to the valley below.  Lunch will probably be here.  We next continue roughly south-south-west for a further 1600 m to another knoll, climbing about 70 m and then due west for about 600 m, where we’ll meet Smokers Trail.  Now it’s downhill to the cars.  The off-track portion is only about 5 km in total, but the regrowth, fallen trees and rocky sections keep the pace down to an average of 1.5 kph in the bush.  Climb: 450 m. Cars: 70 km ($8). Map: Corin Dam.  Meet at K at 8.30 am.***

Sun 4 Dec – BOOROOMBA ROCKS – 11 km Easy (7)
Leader: Elaine A. A pleasant walk along tracks from Honeysuckle Creek campground to the Booroomba Rocks, then off track to explore the rock slabs around peak 1396. Lunch with fabulous views.  Return the same way. Total climb: 400 m. Cars: 70 km ($8). Map: Corin Dam.  Meet at K.

Fri 9-Mon 12 Dec – FOUR DAYS IN THE SNOWY MOUNTAINS AT PERISHER – Easy/Medium
Leader: Judy L. This is a great summer stay in a comfortable lodge.   Temperature is approximately 10 degrees cooler than Canberra.  Easy walks, with a couple of medium options (2 leaders). Cost for adult accommodation is approximately $138 pp, or $102 pp for members of the Canberra Alpine Club.  Contact Judy for details.  Bookings must be made by 2 Nov.  Limited numbers.

Leaders: Joe and Ivor S. Meander through forest, woodland and grassy glades for an excellent overview of Mulligans Flat. Cars: $0. Meet at the Mulligans Flat and Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve, Red Gum Gate car park off Amy Ackman Street Forde at 9.00 am.***

We will hold the picnic/barbecue at the home of Rene L, Kaleen, from 6.00 pm. BYO food and portable chairs if you have them. Also bring a jumper/jacket. A four-burner barbecue and some wine and juice will be supplied. Enquiries Rene.

Sun 18 Dec – BACK OR GRASSY CREEK – 13 km Easy (7) 
Leader: John C.  The walk starts at the Mt Clear car park. We go upstream alongside the Naas River and turn into Grassy Creek. Follow Grassy Creek towards the Boboyan Road. After lunch we return along Grassy Creek to Naas River, then circle back through hills to rejoin the river about 1 km from cars. Variety of scenery from narrow wooded valleys to open grassland. Climb: 250 m. Cars: 130 km ($16). Maps: Yaouk, Shannons Flat. Meet at K.

ADVANCE NOTICES

5-11 Mar 2017 – MALLACOOTA
Leader:  David W.  I am planning to book Karbeethong Lodge at Mallacoota http://www.karbeethonglodge.com.au/ for a week of coastal and inland walking with enough time to sit on the verandah looking out over the estuary.  This is a lovely old 1920’s guest house with a variety of rooms from double ensuite to share. If we book the whole lodge the rates will be roughly $70.00 per person per night which includes breakfast.  Expressions of interest from you at any stage, but I will require a deposit of $200 per person by 31 Oct and the balance a fortnight before departure.  Once paid, this deposit will only be refunded if I can allocate the booking to someone else.  Deadline, including deposit, is 31 Oct.

Early Apr 2017 – GREAT SOUTH WEST WALK, VICTORIA – Easy/Medium Day Walks
Leader: John C. About 2 weeks staying in Portland, Nelson and one other town. Probably about 5 nights in each town. Accommodation will be in cabins or camping. Walking will be along the coast, along the Glenelg River and in National Park areas. The walk is 250 km long and we will do some of the areas accessible by cars. It is at least a 10 hour drive from Canberra. You can do less than 2 weeks if you wish.  Contact John to indicate your interest.
